The Donut & Muffin Factory was the donut shop we visited to kick off The Great Jelly Donut Hunt — the inaugural donut shop.
We went on a late-start Monday (school starts an hour later on Mondays, so we wake up at the normal time to head out for donuts on the first late-start Monday of the month). So it was dark out.
My wife and four of my six kids wanted to come. We went armed with our review booklets.
Between the six of us, we got 4 jelly donuts, a chocolate sprinkles donut (for my youngest), and my wife got an apple fritter. Since this was our inaugural outing, I probably did not do as great of a job of taking pictures as I should have. I only took pictures of my jelly donut.
The Jelly Donut Review
The store looks okay. The vibe is that you have a guy who is too busy making great donuts to spend the time or energy to make his storefront anything beyond adequate. In this case, I’m kind of okay with that because the jelly donut is pretty much amazing.
The shape and appearance of the doughnut is very pleasing. The only thing that brings it down a tiny bit is that the glaze has a faint yellow tint. It’s a very delicious glaze — just an unusual color. The dough is delicious; both thick and soft. The jelly is the perfect amount. The bites with jelly were the perfect ratio of jelly to dough. In fact, I only had one bite that didn’t have any jelly (and the dough was great). When I was eating it, I told my wife, “I think we may have found the best jelly donut right out the gate. It’s probably the best jelly donut I’ve ever eaten!”
The donut was $1.95, which strikes me as being a little pricey. I think this donut was totally worth that price, which is why I’m giving it 4 stars. I may adjust the value score once I can compare it to more donut shops, though.
